Memories of My Childhood Part I

  by Barbara Jean Briggs

When I was 2 1/2 years of age my family lived in Bridgeport,Connecticut. My parents worked at the Remmington Rand arsenal(not sure if that is the right name but it's close). The factory had a contest for the cutest baby, my Mom was urged by some of the people that worked there to enter me in the contest. She did not have nice clothes for me to wear so some of her friends got together and bought me white patent leather shoes,a frilly dress and a ribbon for my hair. I had curlly hair like Shirley Temple.(I was called Shirley Temple all my childhood days). I was entered in the contest and I win the prize, it was a War Bond. I don't remember what the value was. There were photographers that took lots of pictures of me. I was Pin-up Baby of the year and my picture was sent to all the Armed Forces in United States. I remember at times the air raid sirens would sound off and the homes were to be darkened no light at all. Mom would gather all of us (7) children to calm us down. Then after a long time we could turn the lights back on. I remember that my Mom had ration cards for food, Dad had them for gasoline. We moved to Vermont when I was about 4 years of age. Dad rented a huge truck and packed it full of furniture, food and clothing. The little ones rode in the cab with Mom and Dad. The others were in the back of the truck sitting on furniture. There was a huge tarp over the top of the truck. We would stop only if someone had to go potty. We ate sandwiches and drank water on the road. It took a long time to get to Vermont. Then Mom and Dad had to find a place to live. Meanwhile we stayed with our relatives.
